Welder qualification, WPS and welding procedures in 3 seconds.
ISO 3834 is the international quality standard for fusion welding of metallic materials. IgeraIndustria makes every requirement queryable: welder qualification (EN ISO 9606), WPS and WPQR, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), traceability and EXC certification. The welding coordinator finds the answer in seconds.
ISO 3834: the standard that blocks the most steel construction projects in Europe
ISO 3834 certification is a mandatory requirement for manufacturers of steel structures with CE marking under EN 1090, pressure vessels (EN 13445) and lifting equipment. Yet the documentary complexity of WPS, the management of welder qualifications and traceability records create constant bottlenecks in quality departments.
EN 1090
Mandatory CE marking for steel structures. Requires the ISO 3834 level corresponding to the execution class (EXC1-4).
WPS
Welding Procedure Specification: the key document auditors will check alongside its supporting WPQR at every audit.
EN ISO 9606
Welder qualification: expires every 6 months without certified maintenance. Manual management is a leading source of NCs.
EXC3/4
Demanding execution classes: ISO 3834-2 mandatory with full traceability, 100% NDT on critical joints and a qualified coordinator.
The welding coordinator spends hours checking whether a WPS covers the thickness and material group arriving at the workshop, or verifying that a welder holds a valid qualification for a given position. IgeraIndustria answers those questions in seconds, with an exact reference to the applicable standard, so the technical team can focus on producing conforming welds.
Instant ISO 3834 queries by process and material
IgeraIndustria pinpoints the exact requirement that applies to each question and responds with qualification criteria, applicable WPS parameters, required NDT methods and the most common errors in ISO 3834 certification audits.
Welder qualification range by essential variables
Ask in natural language — «what positions does my TIG welder's qualification on stainless steel plate cover?» — and IgeraIndustria retrieves the EN ISO 9606-1 range, the covered positions and applicable thickness and diameter limitations.
WPS and WPQR validity and maintenance
When a WPS expires, which parameter changes require a new WPQR, how to document semi-annual maintenance and which renewal tests are required under EN ISO 15614-1.
ISO 3834 level selection by execution class
Correspondence between EN 1090-2 EXC1-4 and ISO 3834-2/3/4 levels. Requirements at each level: documentation, qualified personnel, facilities, material control and mandatory records.

Base material traceability under EN 10204
Material certificate requirements (3.1 or 3.2) according to execution class, how to manage traceability of plates and sections from goods receipt to the final welded joint, and which records the company must retain.
Preheat and interpass temperature control
Preheat requirements under EN ISO 13916, minimum temperature calculation based on material group (CR ISO 15608), thickness and welding process. Maximum interpass temperature as specified in the approved WPS.
Full ISO 3834 audit support
Whether for initial certification audits, periodic renewals or customer audits, IgeraIndustria provides the support the welding coordinator needs at every stage of the ISO 3834 audit cycle.
Audit preparation with requirement-by-requirement checklist
For each requirement of ISO 3834-2 and -3, IgeraIndustria generates a verification list with the documents the auditor will request, the evidence demonstrating compliance and the typical errors that lead to non-conformities in first-time certification.
Gap analysis vs required ISO 3834 level
Identifies requirements that are partially implemented or lack documentary evidence. Particularly useful for companies upgrading from ISO 3834-3 to ISO 3834-2 due to new EXC3 contracts.
Qualification management with expiry alerts
IgeraIndustria cross-references each welder's qualification (process, position, material group, thickness) against active workshop jobs and alerts when a welder lacks a valid qualification for the assigned task.
WPS review against incoming materials
When a new work order arrives with a different material or thickness, IgeraIndustria checks whether the existing WPS covers those conditions or whether a new procedure qualification is needed (EN ISO 15614-1).
Weld repair documentation
Support for the repair process: defect identification (type, dimensions, location), selection of the appropriate repair WPS, additional preheat requirements and post-repair NDT as specified by the product standard.
Corrective action plans for welding NCs
Audit non-conformity response structure: welding-specific root cause analysis (missing qualification, incomplete WPS, out-of-range parameters, traceability gap), corrective action, deadline and effectiveness verification.
The 4 key standards in the ISO 3834 ecosystem
ISO 3834 does not stand alone. Its application requires mastery of a set of related standards that IgeraIndustria has indexed and makes queryable in an integrated way.
EN ISO 15614-1 — Welding procedure qualification (WPQR)
Defines how to qualify a welding procedure by means of a welding test: test piece preparation, recorded welding parameters, mandatory mechanical tests (tensile, bend, Charpy impact, macro, hardness), acceptance criteria by material type and how to determine the range of validity of the resulting WPQR. It is the foundational standard for obtaining the WPQR that supports each production WPS.
EN ISO 9606-1 — Welder qualification (steels)
Establishes the essential variables determining a welder's qualification range: process (111, 131, 141, 135, 136, etc.), joint type (butt BW, fillet FW), position (PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF, PG), base material group (CR ISO 15608 groups 1-11), filler metal type (with or without filler, rutile, basic), test piece thickness and pipe diameter. Each combination of variables defines a specific application range.
EN ISO 14731 — Welding coordination
Defines the knowledge levels required for the welding coordinator: European Welding Technician (EWT), European Welding Specialist (EWS), European Welding Engineer (EWE). Each ISO 3834 level requires a minimum level of qualified coordinator. The coordinator's availability, responsibilities and competences are verified at every certification audit.
EN ISO 9712 — NDT personnel qualification
Defines qualification levels for personnel performing non-destructive testing: Level 1 (perform under supervision), Level 2 (perform, evaluate and report), Level 3 (NDT system responsibility). For ISO 3834, NDT evaluators issuing reports must hold Level 2 in the relevant method (VT, PT, MT, UT, RT). Qualification is method- and sector-specific.

Frequently asked questions — ISO 3834 Welding
What is the difference between ISO 3834-2 and ISO 3834-3?
ISO 3834 has three levels of quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials. ISO 3834-2 defines comprehensive requirements and is mandatory for EXC3 and EXC4 structures under EN 1090-2. ISO 3834-3 defines standard requirements, applicable to EXC2. ISO 3834-4 defines elementary requirements for EXC1 structures. The choice of level depends on the execution class required by the client or project, the applicable standard (EN 1090, EN 13480, etc.) and the criticality of the welded assemblies. Certification bodies (TUV, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd's) audit compliance with the level agreed with the client.
How is a welder qualified according to EN ISO 9606?
Welder qualification under EN ISO 9606-1 (steels) is obtained by passing a welding test under the conditions defined by the essential variables: welding process (111 shielded metal arc, 131 MIG, 141 TIG, etc.), joint type (butt, fillet), welding position (PA flat, PB horizontal, PF vertical upward, PE overhead, etc.), material type (group according to CR ISO 15608), product type (plate or pipe), filler metal and thickness. The qualification obtained has a range of validity covering conditions similar to those of the test. Validity is 3 years if the company certifies semi-annual maintenance. The welding coordinator must record and monitor the validity of all qualifications.
What is the difference between WPS and WPQR?
The WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) is the document describing how to perform a weld: process, base and filler materials, edge preparation, position, electrical parameters (current, voltage, travel speed) and heat treatments. The WPQR (Welding Procedure Qualification Record) is the document recording the results of the test that validated that WPS: welded test piece, mechanical tests performed (tensile, bend, Charpy impact, macro, hardness) and the evaluation by the testing body. A WPS is only valid if a WPQR exists to support it. Both documents are systematically reviewed in ISO 3834 audits.
Which Non-Destructive Tests (NDT) are mandatory under ISO 3834?
ISO 3834 requires NDT to be performed according to the inspection level defined in the applicable product standard and execution class. For steel structures under EN 1090-2, the main methods are: visual testing (VT — EN ISO 17637, always mandatory), liquid penetrant testing (PT — EN ISO 3452-1), magnetic particle testing (MT — EN ISO 17638), ultrasonic testing (UT — EN ISO 17640) and radiographic testing (RT — EN ISO 17636). The inspection percentage and acceptance criteria depend on the execution class (EXC1 to EXC4) and the joint category. NDT personnel issuing reports must hold Level 2 qualification under EN ISO 9712.
What is EXC certification and how does it relate to ISO 3834?
EXC (Execution Class) is the EN 1090-2 classification system for steel structures. It defines the manufacturing requirement level in four classes: EXC1 (simple structures, low consequence of failure), EXC2 (standard residential and industrial buildings), EXC3 (structures with high consequence of failure) and EXC4 (singular structures with life safety risk). The relationship with ISO 3834 is direct: EXC1 requires ISO 3834-4, EXC2 requires ISO 3834-3, EXC3 and EXC4 require ISO 3834-2. To obtain the CE marking for steel structures under EN 1090-1 it is necessary to demonstrate ISO 3834 conformity at the corresponding level, generally through third-party certification.
What weld traceability records does ISO 3834 require?
ISO 3834-2 (comprehensive requirements) demands exhaustive traceability throughout the welding process. Mandatory records include: identification of base materials used (material certificates 3.1 or 3.2 per EN 10204), WPS code applied to each joint, identification of the welder who performed each run and their valid qualification at that time, actual welding parameters (current, voltage, travel speed), preheat and interpass temperatures, results of NDT performed and their evaluation, and any repair made with its repair WPS. This level of documentation is examined in detail by certification bodies and is one of the areas where the most non-conformities are found in first-time certification audits.
