VSM Lead Time Reduction Calculator
Calculate your current process efficiency and the potential lead time reduction by applying the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) methodology.
How is it calculated?
Lead time is the total time elapsed from the start of a process until the product or service is delivered. The VSM (Value Stream Mapping) methodology distinguishes between value-added time (activities the customer perceives as valuable) and non-value-added time (waits, queues, unnecessary transport).
- Process efficiency (%) = (Value-added time / Total lead time) × 100
- Non-value-added time = Total lead time − Value-added time
- Reduction potential = 50% of non-value-added time (typical conservative estimate in VSM projects)
In most industrial processes, real efficiency ranges between 1% and 10%. Reducing waits and queues through VSM and Kaizen typically enables 30-50% lead time cuts without investing in new machinery.
