Frequently asked questions — AS9100 / EN9100

What is the difference between AS9100 and EN9100?

AS9100 is the standard published by SAE International, adopted primarily in the USA and by the North American aerospace industry. EN9100 is the European version, published by ASD-STAN, technically equivalent to AS9100 but adopted by IAQG for the European market. Both standards are harmonised and technically identical in requirements. The choice between AS9100 and EN9100 depends on the target market: Boeing suppliers typically require AS9100, while Airbus, Leonardo or Safran suppliers require EN9100. Certification obtained from an IAQG-accredited body is recognised in both markets through the OASIS register.

What is FOD and why is it a specific AS9100 requirement?

FOD (Foreign Object Damage / Foreign Object Debris) is the damage or risk caused by foreign objects in aeronautical parts or equipment during manufacturing, maintenance or assembly. AS9100/EN9100 requires organisations to implement FOD prevention programmes (clause 8.5.4). This includes: tool and material control procedures in work areas, closure inspections before sealing panels or cavities, specific personnel training, and tool traceability. FOD is responsible for serious aeronautical accidents and its control is critical throughout the supply chain.

What is the OASIS register and why is it mandatory?

OASIS (Online Aerospace Supplier Information System) is the IAQG global database where all active AS9100/EN9100/AS9110/AS9120 certifications are registered. Aerospace OEMs (Boeing, Airbus, Safran, etc.) consult OASIS to verify that their suppliers have a current certification before awarding contracts. An AS9100 certificate not active in OASIS is not recognised by sector customers. The certification body is obliged to register and update the certificate status in OASIS.

What is FRACAS and when is it required?

FRACAS (Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System) is a failure management system that AS9100/EN9100 references in the context of non-conformance management and continuous improvement. It requires that product failures detected in the field or during production are reported, analysed for root cause, and treated with documented and verified corrective actions. It is especially relevant for manufacturers of structural components or critical systems. Some defence contracts explicitly require a certified FRACAS system as part of the programme quality plan.
